Boys Basketball:

  • 6th/7th Grades - Thursday, November 17th after school in the gym
  • 8th Grade - Friday, November 18th after school in the gym

The coaches are Jack Taylor and Hunter Braun. Questions about tryouts can be directed to Jack Taylor at jtaylor@lbusd.org

Girls Basketball:

  • 6th/7th Grades - Monday, November 21st after school in the gym
  • 8th Grade - Tuesday, November 22nd after school in the gym

The coach for both teams is Chanel Stewart. Questions about tryouts can be directed to Chanel Stewart at cstewart@lbusd.org

Boys and Girls Cross Country:

Cross Country is a "no-cut" sport. If you are interested in running for Thurston XC the first practice is Monday, November 28th at 3:15 p.m. on Thurston's track.

The coaches are Steve Lalim and Kristine Von Iderstein for the girls' team and Tommy Newton Neal and Aliyah Neal for the boys' team.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District is honored to have earned two awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) in the category of Publications and Digital Media Excellence. The entries that were awarded this honor include the LBUSD Mental Health Awareness Video, created by Andy Crisp, and Renew, Recharge, Reimagine: LBUSD's Annual Community Report 2020-2021, created by the Communications Department.

The FOA Foundation recently awarded Laguna Beach High School and Thurston Middle School with grants totaling $10,000 toward ceramics, art, and theatre. In 1989, the Festival of Arts, with a $1.5 million donation, established the FOA Foundation, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, in order to guarantee annual financial support, preserve, and promote the fine arts and all other artistic endeavors in Laguna Beach.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced earlier this week the winners of the newly created 2022 California Pivotal Practice (CAPP) Award Program. This award program has taken the place of the California Distinguished Schools (DS) Program this year. It honors and recognizes schools and districts that went above and beyond to implement innovative practices during the 2020–21 school year when California required schools to offer distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Forensics isn’t your typical class in middle school, but thanks to mother-daughter duo, Michelle and Noelle Martinez, what started out as an after-school club nine years ago at Thurston Middle School (TMS) has also become an extremely popular and sought after 7th grade elective rotation for the last five years.
