On March 14, the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education approved the implementation of a new visitor registration system. The computerized visitor registration system will screen visitors to district schools to ensure efficient tracking and consistency of security procedures.

El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools will implement a full day kindergarten program beginning with the 2017-18 school year. El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools will open the online registration process for kindergarten on April 10, 2017.

At its Jan. 10 meeting, the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Director of Facilities Jeff Dixon as the interim assistant superintendent of business services, effective Jan. 11, 2017.

On November 8th, El Morro 4th and 5th graders participated in their own election for El Morro Student Council. Coming up to election day, 5th grade students ran in classroom primaries. The winners of the classroom primaries were then qualified to run in the general election for various Student Council offices.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District's School Readiness program is promoting early literacy, providing parent education, supporting school readiness and increasing awareness of community resources as part of the Fall in Love with Reading program.

In October, El Morro 3rd graders worked to raise awareness for Socktober, a fundraiser meant to help the homeless by providing socks for the neediest members of our community. Students worked with their teachers to create posters and video advertisements for the event.

The district has partnered with Schneider Electric to start the construction of a district-wide energy efficiency project. The project will improve comfort and efficiency at all sites and will have a positive environmental impact. Once completed, the district will reduce the annual electricity spend by 28 percent, saving $115,000 each year that can be reinvested back into the classroom.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District will offer free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting September 26. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and will utilize a blend of in class and online instruction.

El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools have opened new science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) labs for the 2016-2017 school year. Students will participate in hands-on activities to solidify their learning and develop an interest in STEAM.

Mark you calendars! Wednesday, September 21st is Back-to-School Night! Grades 3rd through 5th are from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and Grades TK through 2nd are from 6:15 to 7:15 pm. Students in grades 1 through 5 will be dismissed at 11:45 am on the day of Back-to-School-Night. Kindergarten and TK will be on a minimum day schedule and dismissed at 10:45 am.
